The smooth surfaces of angular and
rounded rocks seen in this image of the martian terrain released by NASA
Tuesday Jan. 6, 2004 may be the result of wind-polishing debris. The pictue
was taken by the panoramic camera on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit.
NASA unveiled a breathtaking color photo of the surface of Mars, the sharpest
photograph ever taken on the surface of Mars.

NASA super-sizes Mars rover pictures
- PASADENA, Calif. - Thirty pints of ink, 3,000 square feet of photographic paper ?and counting. That’s what NASA has burned through printing otherworldly, super-sized pictures of Mars that are sent to dozens of museums, many of which display them immediately. It’s part of NASA’s aggressive effort to promote interest in the Red Planet and the agency’s stunning photos...

NASA Twin Rovers Analyze Mars Surface
- NASA's twin rovers reached out to scoop and analyze the martian surface some 6,600 miles apart, both machines using their robotic arms as intended following a software glitch. "We have two operational rovers on Mars," mission manager Jennifer Trosper told a Monday news conference at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory...

Life once existed on Mars, Australian scientists say - Australian scientists believe they have found evidence that life once existed on Mars. They have found that microscopic fossils of primitive bacteria-like organisms in a Mars meteorite match characteristics of bacteria found in mud in Queensland...

Second Mars Rover Sends Pictures to Earth - PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - NASA's Opportunity rover zipped its first pictures of Mars to Earth early Sunday, delighting and puzzling scientists just hours after the spacecraft bounced to a landing on the opposite side of the red planet from its twin rover, Spirit. The pictures showed a surface smooth and dark red in some places, and strewn with fragmented slabs of light bedrock in others. Bounce marks apparently left by the rover's air bags when it landed were clearly visible...

NASA Scrambles to Diagnose Rover Signal Problems - NASA scientists on Thursday scrambled to find out what had gone wrong with the Mars rover Spirit after 24 hours of garbled communications and intermittent silence caused by an unknown malfunction. The scientists reported that at 9 a.m. PST (noon EST) on Thursday Spirit had radioed a signal indicating it was receiving Earth transmissions even though it had not resumed sending data back to Earth..

NASA Team Loses Contact with Mars Rover - PASADENA - NASA scientists said on Thursday that they had lost contact with the robot rover Spirit on Mars and were unsure what had caused the problem. Spirit project manager Pete Theisinger told a news briefing that there was a "very serious anomaly" in communications with the six-wheeled craft, which landed on Mars on Jan. 3 on a planned three month mission to explore the geologic history of the planet...

`Bizarre' images of Mars sent by rover - PASADENA, Calif. ?NASA's Spirit rover has rolled for the first time since reaching Mars, backing up 10 inches atop its platform as it began to reposition itself in preparation for exploring the Red Planet's surface later this week. "Spirit is a rover," flight director Chris Lewicki said Tuesday. The six-wheeled robot, which previously stood up from a crouched position, had otherwise been largely immobile since landing Jan. 3...

`Bizarre' images of Mars sent by rover - The first color photography of the Spirit mission, made public on Tuesday, showed that the robotic rover was resting on a broad, ruddy plain of Mars among gray rocks of all sizes and shapes, streaks of windblown dust tracks, a patch of cohesive soil that looks like mud but cannot be and hills set against a pink sky on the distant horizon. Scientists used words like "bizarre" and "shock and awe" to describe the scene. Planners of the exploring excursions, set to begin early next week, saw nothing on the landscape to impede the 180kg, six-wheel rover's wide-ranging maneuvers....

NASA Unveils Color Snapshot of Mars - PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - NASA unveiled a breathtaking color snapshot Tuesday of the surface of Mars shot by its Spirit rover using a camera with the robotic equivalent of 20/20 vision. The new color image is the sharpest photograph ever taken on the surface of Mars. NASA scientists called the picture a "postcard," sent across 105 million miles of space to Earth from its Spirit rover...
